Earth Day 2020
Wednesday will mark the 50th commemoration of Earth Day. The yearly celebration that generally joins more than 1 billion individuals who partake in different environmental-friendly activities over the globe. This year, Earth Day 2020 coordinators are pushing worldwide computerized assembly in a 24-hour source of inspiration, urging individuals to take part in chances to have any kind of effect from the solace of their homes.
Yet, what precisely is Earth Day?
This is what you have to know:
History of Earth Day
The first Earth Day celebration befell 50 years ago, in 1970, after a devastating oil spill in America brought environmental troubles to the forefront of public consciousness. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 22 million humans across the country came out with the help of environmental reform.
“That day left a permanent impact on the politics of America,” Gaylord Nelson wrote in the April 1980 edition of the EPA Journal. “It forcibly thrust the issue of environmental quality and resources conservation into the political dialogue of the nation.
“It showed political and opinion leaders of the country that the people cared, that they were ready for political action, that the politicians had better get ready, too. In short, Earth Day launched the environmental decade with a bang.”
Since then, celebrations of Earth Day have best grown. This year, organizers estimate greater than 1 billion humans in 192 international locations will participate in events the arena over. The day is widely known each year on April 22.
The theme of Earth Day
Every year, Earth Day Network assigns a theme for the year-long environment activism. The theme for Earth Day 2019 was “Protect our Species”. This year’s theme “Climate Action”, tends to focus on the means to raise awareness towards crisis. Environment Activists are terming the global climate change to no less than a crisis.
Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable.
Earth Day Network, which partners with tens of thousands of organizations in nearly 200 countries to organize Earth Day events, said on its website. The organization is motivating people to reduce carbon footprints. They are also working tirelessly to raise enough awareness so that all government takes adequate and stern measurements for this crisis.
The time is now for citizens to call for greater global ambition to tackle our climate crisis. Unless every country in the world steps up, we are consigning current and future generations to a dangerous future ~ Earth Day Network
How are we celebrating it this year?
In normal circumstances, Earth Day is celebrated with community cleanup across cities. But! This year, as we all know due to the COVID19 pandemic, all activities are getting digitalize. Digital engagements like, webinars, discussions and social media campaigns are taking the driver seat this time.
“Amid the recent outbreak, we encourage people to rise up but to do so safely and responsibly — in many cases, that means using our voices to drive action online rather than in person,”
Kathleen Rogers, President of Earth Day Network, said in a press release.
“Whether it be coronavirus or our global climate crisis, we cannot shut down. Instead, we must shift our energies and efforts to new ways to mobilize the world to action.”
